History of Predator Franchise Timeline

The Predator was initially conceived by screenwriters Jim and John Thomas and designed by special effects artist Stan Winston. Originally, 20th Century Fox had contracted the makeup effects for the creature from Richard Edlund's Boss Film Creature Shop before Winston's design became definitive.

Directed by John McTiernan, the 1987 science fiction action film Predator featured the titular villain hunting military personnel in Central America. The film introduced hallmarks of the species: vocal mimicry, trophy collection, thermal vision, active camouflage, plasma weaponry, and self-destruction. Human characters referred to it as a "hunter" or "the demon who makes trophies of men."

The Predator's voice was provided by Peter Cullen, who used a clicking growl to prevent vocal strain, as he had done for the uncredited vocal effects of King Kong (1976).

Set ten years after the original, Predator 2 relocated the action to Los Angeles, depicting a clan of Predators in a concealed spacecraft. A flintlock pistol used to defeat a Predator in 1719 reappears in the film, maintaining continuity with Prey (2022). The appearance of an elder Predator and the ceremonial gifting of the 1715 pistol suggest a formalized hierarchy and tradition, while a trophy case featuring a Xenomorph skull hints at broader hunting beyond Earth.

In Predators (2010), Brian Steele and Carey Jones portrayed the "Black Super Predators," a new breed who had been dropping humans on their planet for years to play a survival game against them. For their design, creators used the differences between a cassette tape and an iPod as an analogy in differentiating the new subspecies from the original. Robert Rodriguez, the film's producer, stated the title is a double meaning referring to the alien hunters and the human characters alike.

The 2010 film Predators employed KNB EFX Group for its creature effects, continuing the franchise's tradition of practical creature work.

The Predator (2018) depicts genetically enhanced Predators combining human and alien DNA to increase physical capabilities. Stuntman Brian A. Prince portrayed the creature, and Amalgamated Dynamics (Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr.'s company) returned for effects. For this film, the camouflage effect was achieved by digitally manipulating the camera footage's colour instead of using a thermal camera.

The prequel Prey (2022), set in 1719, depicts a more primitive Predator targeting a Comanche tribe and French voyageurs in the Great Plains of North America. The Comanche characters refer to it as "Mupitsi," derived from Pia Mupitsi ('Mother owl'), a monster in Comanche folklore. Across the first five films, the creatures are identified in the end credits simply as Predators.

Predator: Killer of Killers (2025) was among the films where the term Yautja was incorporated into film continuity, appearing alongside Predator: Badlands.
