Timelines Dashboard Overview

The Timelines dashboard lists every timeline you have created, plus any timelines other people have shared with you. To get there, click the Timelines link at the top of the screen.

An empty dashboard

A new account shows only the Create Manually, Create With AI, and Create Folder buttons, with empty space below them. There is no "you have no timelines yet" message, and the timeline count and the Sort links stay hidden until you have at least one timeline, so a blank dashboard does not mean anything went wrong.

An open folder with nothing in it looks different: its heading reads 0 timelines and the Sort links and gear icon are all there, because you are inside a folder rather than looking at your whole account.

Creating a timeline

  • Click Create Manually to pick a starting layout and name the timeline yourself. See Create a Timeline for what happens on that screen.
  • Click Create With AI to describe the timeline you want and have Preceden generate it for you.

Opening a timeline

Click the timeline's thumbnail image or name.

Timelines other people created

A timeline you did not create shows by and the first part of that person's email address beside its name. Your own timelines show nothing there.

Two kinds of timeline arrive on your dashboard that way:

  • Timelines shared with you as a collaborator. You can edit them, but their three-dot menu has no Delete, because only the owner can delete a timeline. See Collaborate with Others on Timelines.
  • Timelines created by other members of your team, if you are on a team plan. Every member's timelines appear on every other member's dashboard automatically, without anyone sending an invitation for each one, and you can open, rename, duplicate, and delete them exactly as you would your own. See Plans for how team seats and invitations work.

Sorting your timelines

  • Click the Name link to sort alphabetically by name.
  • Click the Updated link to put the most recently updated timelines first.

Renaming, duplicating, and deleting a timeline

  1. Hover over the timeline to reveal the three-dot menu in the top right corner of its title bar.
  2. Click the menu, then choose Rename, Duplicate, or Delete.

For more on each of those, see Rename Your Timeline, Duplicate a Timeline, and Delete a Timeline.

Organizing timelines into folders

  • Click the Create Folder button and give the folder a name. Folder names can be up to 30 characters and must differ from your other folder names by more than capitalization or punctuation. If you already have a "Projects" folder, for example, "projects" and "Projects." are refused as too similar.
  • Drag a timeline onto a folder to move it into that folder, or click the timeline's three-dot menu and choose Move to followed by the folder's name. Dragging only works from your main list, where the folders are shown. The menu works inside a folder too, and lists every folder except the one you have open, so you can move a timeline straight from one folder into another. A timeline can only be in one folder at a time, so moving it into a second folder takes it out of the first.
  • Click a folder to open it. The folder's name appears in a breadcrumb above the buttons; click Home in that breadcrumb to get back to all of your timelines.
  • To rename or delete the folder you have open, click the gear icon to the right of the timeline count and choose Rename Folder or Delete Folder.

A timeline you create with Create Manually while a folder is open goes into that folder. To take it back out, open the folder, click the timeline's three-dot menu, and choose Move Out of Folder.

A folder has to be empty before you can delete it. If it still holds timelines, move them out of the folder or delete them first.

On a team plan, folders belong to the team rather than to one person. A folder you create is visible to everyone on the team, and the folders you already had move to the team when you accept the invitation.
